Welfare indicators

Welfare indicators are used to gauge the welfare of the animals. Resource-based and animal-based indicators are used.
These are simple parameters that are easy to measure and are then compiled in order to define the effectiveness of animal
keeping and the welfare of the animals.

For accommodation:

  • Access to a clean, comfortable den
  • Approved space
  • Enrichment
  • Good temperature regulation

Equipment and fittings:

  • Function
  • Clean and unbroken equipment and storage
  • Accessibility

For health:

  • Occurrence of disease
  • Occurrence of injury
  • Animal cleanliness

For behaviour:

  • Temperament testing using the stick test
  • Occurrence of fur biting
  • Occurrence of stereotypical behaviour

Feed:

  • Nutritional composition
  • Chemical quality
  • Hygiene quality
